I felt like drawing circles, and as I kept filling in tiny ones, I remembered a video of a paramecium, a single-celled organism, helping another paramecium that was struggling to divide. I kept wondering whether that paramecium acted on instinct or actually thought it through. Living things behave in all sorts of ways, but where does instinct begin and end, anyway? And my own urge to draw circles: was it something I thought up in my head, or something I wanted by instinct? I wonder which it was.
