When I looked at a painting of a phoenix, the image of a Buddha came to mind. While trying to find out which Buddha it was, I came across the word "mani" in a Buddhist chant called the Mantra of Light. It felt close to me because it sounds like my name, so I painted this while picturing Hōshō Nyorai (the Buddha Ratnasambhava), whom "mani" refers to. That said, there seem to be differing views on whether "mani" really refers to Hōshō Nyorai.
